Sony Pictures's new film,
An Education, opened last week to some mixed reviews. Everyone seems to agree about the impressive performance given by newcomer Carey Mulligan - she was very good, matching and surpassing performances in a few scenes with some very seasoned co-stars (Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson...) However, I've yet to see anyone discuss the clothing. The film takes place in post-war 1960's Britain, an amazing time for fashion. Costume Designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux (The Constant Gardener,Dirty Pretty Things) does a wonderful job reminding us of the power of using wardrobe in story-telling. Watch main character Jenny's transistion from schoolgirl to the very brink of sophisticated mod. Check out Rosamund Pike's character, Helen, having a Belle du Jour/Catherine Deneuve moment and Jenny's very painterly floral sheath for a trip to Paris...
